Name a Beer Winner – Octopolis

Winner of the “Name a Beer” Competition is Peter Costello with the beer name “Octopolis”.

Many people may not realize that Jervis Bay is world-famous amongst cephalopod-researchers for being the site of the first observed “Octopus cities”. Usually solitary creatures, in 2009 scientists discovered groups of octopus had built a series of dens out of shells and sand and other stuff laying around on the Jervis Bay seabed, at about 10-15m depth of water. These “cities” are pretty huge, in octopus terms, measuring 18 x 4 meters in area. In Octopolis scientists have observed a lot of never-before-seen cooperative and social behaviors, even observing what they described as “Octopus Fight Club”, where these amazing creatures sometimes even used weapons to evict unwanted guests, hurling seashells at each other!

In 2017 a second octopus city named “Octlantis” was also discovered here in Jervis Bay, challenging many long-held beliefs about these incredible creatures.

So we will use this weird and wonderful, little-know feature of life here in Jervis Bay to inspire a new beer soon! Maybe 8 different hops, one for each tentacle… who knows!

If your amazing suggestion missed out, never fear, we’ll be dipping into the list plenty to inspire us for more world-class brews in the future!
