As part of their quest to become one of Australia’s most sustainable breweries, Jervis Bay Brewing Co. have purchased their first electric vehicle to add to their fleet. The addition of a silent-running zero emissions BYD T3 van for their new Sydney sales team is the latest of many innovative initiatives being undertaken by the Jervis Bay brewers.
Minimising their environmental footprint has been a top priority for the founders of Jervis Bay Brewing Co. from the moment the business was conceived in 2018. For their Head Brewer, Dr Oisín Sweeney, with his background in Conservation Ecology and over a decade spent working in the field, the opportunity to explore the feasibility of a truly sustainable business was a huge drawcard to starting a brewery on the shores of Jervis Bay.
“Let’s be honest: buying any vehicle is not sustainable. However, if you have to get one, an EV is a vast improvement on petrol or diesel. So it’s pretty cool to add an electric vehicle to our fleet to reduce our carbon emissions. However, the bigger picture is much more exciting: we’re making big strides in reducing electricity, gas and water use in the brewing processes and in the taproom. We want to demonstrate that small businesses can take big steps to reduce their environmental impact if they choose.
“We’re under no illusions how difficult it will be to achieve zero emissions , because we can’t yet get rid of gas. In the meantime, until there is an alternative to gas, we’ll be going carbon neutral and making every effort to reduce our use of fossil fuels.”
Jervis Bay Brewing Co. plans to be B Corp Certified and completely carbon neutral in 2023. Waste water treatment using floating wetlands, sizable solar arrays on both of their venues, solar hot water systems to preheat brewing water, and the exploration of a world-first waste water to hydrogen conversion facility in partnership with SwitcH2 are just a few of the ways JBBCo is working to deliver award-winning beers with minimal environmental impact.
