How we handle our waste

All of the food and food packaging produced from our food trucks is plastic free and composted. All of the spent grain from brewing operations goes to local farmers as a supplementary stock feed.

We use a landfill biodegradable pallet wrap and sticky tape (from Biogone) throughout the brewery which, although still going in the bin, at least doesn’t hang around in the ground for hundreds of years. Our grain suppliers, Voyager, have also shifted to this pallet wrap, meaning the vast majority of the plastic we use is biodegradable. We – like everyone – still really struggle with single use plastic items such as chip packets. We no longer stock plastic bottles, and instead offer fizzy water that is carbonated in kegs so there is no waste produced. The empty grain bags we produce have been recycled into curtains, tote bags and growler bags (they’re made from cotton so are therefore durable) and don’t go to landfill.

Our toilet paper (we go through lots!) is supplied by Who Gives a Crap, who donate 50% of their profits to build toilets in the developing world, and who use 100% recycled paper in the manufacture of their toilet paper. We also use 100% recycled paper towels. The cardboard boxes in which our cans are packaged are made from 37% recycled material. The plastic clip can holders are made from 100% recycled material and are recyclable themselves. We also reuse these and encourage people to bring their excess holders to the brewery for reuse.

Our keg collars are made from 100% recycled paper. The plastic dust caps on our kegs are deliberately blank so they can be reused several times. However, the dust caps are not recyclable. We have now found a supplier of recyclable dust caps that we will use when the current supply is exhausted.
