Way back in lockdown #1, we made a decision to invest in solar, so that when we reopened we’d reduce our electricity emissions and save money. So we teamed up with Jeremy Roberts, our local solar guru, to cover our roof with a 27kW solar system. We’ve been crunching some numbers to help us understand what we need for our new site, and it turns out the solar has delivered in spades!
We’ve avoided importing 28,940kWh of electricity from the grid thanks to our solar. A meaningless figure to most in that format. But it turns out you can convert this to stats that normal people can better understand. Here are some fun facts about how much energy this equates to:
– Avoided emissions of 20.5 tonnes of CO2
– Driving a car 82,474km
– Burning 10 tonnes of coal
– Burning 48 barrels of oil
– The electricity use of 3.7 homes for one year
– 2.49 million smartphones charged
– 339 tree seedlings growing for 10 years
– The carbon stored in 10 hectares of forest (the equivalent of 5 MCGs)
This is the sort of stuff that makes us proud! But for those more interested in cold hard cash, our solar has saved us $7,975 over five quarters, or $17/day.
